BOARD UPDATE

Homeowner irrigation timers. Homeowners can greatly increase the effectiveness of their home landscape irrigation, as well as reduce water usage, by setting their irrigation timers for multiple (say 3 to 6) short duration (say 2 to 4 minute) waterings, spaced a short time (say 30 to 90 minutes) apart. This "cycle and soak" technique is especially applicable to our locale, with its low permeability soil and steep slopes. Run times and soak intervals will be unique at each home. Watch for water runoff or wilting plants and adjust settings accordingly. Waterings should be necessary only every few (say 2 to 4) days, depending on the weather, and completed in the morning hours, before 10 a.m.

Overwatering. With shorter days and lower temperatures, Fall is a time for homeowners to systematically reduce watering of residential landscaping. The “cycle and soak” technique still applies, with minor adjustments. Start by eliminating one or more days from your weekly watering schedule. Then begin eliminating “cycles” and allowing more “soak” times on watering days, as water runoff is noted and Winter approaches,. Run durations at each “cycle” should not need changing. Also, be sure to remember to shut off sprinkler systems on rainy days.

Parking. Homeowners are asked to ensure visitors and vendors do not park in front of mailboxes, Monday through Saturday, because it interferes with the speedy delivery of mail by postal service letter carriers. Homeowners who witness a vehicle so parked should take a moment to locate the driver and have the vehicle moved.

Overnight Parking Ban. Homeowners are reminded to obtain an Overnight On-street Parking Permit from the Gate Attendant when temporary overnight parking by their guests or themselves is unavoidable.

Gymnasium at Loma Alta Park is open for business. Salsa/Ballroom dancing and exercise programs are available Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also, the Gym directors are looking for volunteers who are skilled (or just plain willing) to assist kids with developing their basketball skills. Drop in and volunteer to help if you can.

West Altadena Community Redevelopment Project Area. Homeowners are urged to attend the periodic meetings of the redevelopment project planned along Lincoln corridor. See http://www.lacdc.org/economic/redevelopment/waltadena.shtm

Association Committees. Homeowner volunteers with an applicable interest or skill are needed in the Architectural Review, Communications, Facilities, Finance, Landscape, Security, and Welcome Committees.
